There’s a new tasty chocolate milkshake in town – it’s dairy free too (think Bounty bar)

When you’re allergic to milk you don’t have to miss out on one of the greatest wonders of the food world: chocolate milkshake!

But, you will have to find the taste that works for you. You can find chocolate milkshakes like Rice Dream Chocolate Flavour or Provamel Organic Soya Chocolate Drink. My favourite by far is Oatly Chocolate made, of course, from oat milk.

Introducing…

A delicious dairy free chocolate milk

A delicious dairy free chocolate milk

But there is a new contender to challenge the non-milk chocolate heavyweights. It’s Kara’s Dairy Free Chocolate made with coconut milk and it’s officially delicious!

For decades chocolate confectionary has been cashing in on the wonderful combined flavours of chocolate and coconut – now it’s a time for a liquid version. And it’s a bonus that it’s dairy and lactose free; no soya, gluten or cholesterol either.

All Kara’s coconut milks have added calcium and vitamins like B12 which is helpful for vegetarians and vitamin D2 which is great for vegans. Plus, just in case you’re wondering, coconuts are fine for people with nut sensitivities too (because they’re really a fruit not a nut – but don’t tell anyone I told you…)

Stuck for a gift? See the Valentine’s Day Chocoholic Hamper

It’s just a few days away now… I’m beginning to wonder if this year’s Valentine’s stories will be more romantic than usual?

It is a leap year after all, which traditionally allows women to propose to their men on the 29th February. (And don’t forget, if the man refuses he is obliged to buy the woman a new pair of gloves or a silk dress!)

But the gentleman might just be waiting for the 1st May where ancient practice dictates he should leave a hawthorn branch at his sweetheart’s door. (Ladies please note that if you don’t want to marry the man you must replace the branch with a cauliflower…)

At least we are not forced to adopt Italian culture where an over confidence in men’s ability to sing results in many young suitors publically serenading their intended brides. Though the Welshmen among us will have to give up their singing in preference for carving a wooden love-spoon for their amor.

The Valentine's Chocoholic Hamper

The Valentine's Chocoholic Hamper

However you choose to celebrate Valentine’s day for goodness sake don’t forget about it!

To help you out GoodnessDirect have put together a Chocoholic’s Valentine’s Hamper to send to a loved one.

What better way to spoil that someone special than with a hamper full of chocolates delivered straight to their door (or workplace)?

The GoodnessDirect hamper service allows you to put whatever you want in your hamper. But the ready-made Valentine’s Chocoholic Hamper is specifically designed as a perfect mix of luxuriously lovely gifts.

The hamper can also include a dictated message in a Valentine’s card for the recipient (written in beautiful handwriting of course).

(Just, please, don’t force us to write “To my dearest Fluffykin”)

Whatever you do, make sure you take the opportunity to spread a little love around.

Is Licorice the elixer of life?

Roger and Regan Halliwelll claim to have found the meaning of life and, they say, it’s soft, black and delicious.

They are the father and son duo behind the surprisingly lovely RJs Licorice. I say surprising because I’ve never been a licorice fan myself. But I sampled these, and you know what? I really liked them.

I have a licorice loving friend, Rob Halligan, who loves licorice so much, everyone buys him the black stuff for his birthday. It was through his chomping through the stuff that I became converted.

Some would say it is the elixer of life...

Some would say it is the elixer of life...

I’m still not sure I’d like other licorice; but RJ’s seem to be a world apart. Not only are they soft and sweet and healthy (*) RJ’s are really clever about the licorice flavours they make.

At GoodnessDirect we’ve recently taken on four new innovative flavours: Raspberry Choc Twists, Raspberry Bullets, Licorice Choc twists and Licorice Bullets – the twists have the chocolate in the middle, the bullets have chocolate on the outside and the raspberry ones involve a fruity flavoured licorice.

Please forgive my clunky description. I’m not yet a licorice expert, but I’m beginning to think I could be persuaded. Certainly now that I have got my hands on these my friendship with Rob could get a lot closer; and friendship is what life is all about after all.

* Licorice or liquorice is still a sweet but as sweets go it is a healthier choice. Black licorice has no fat in it and a little protein which helps the body feel fuller. Obviously there’s a fair bit of sugar there, but also some iron and calcium. There’s also some research into licorice’s effect on ulcers, eczema, cold symptoms  and even indigestion, but the results are mixed.

Seed & Bean chocolate bars are packed with flavour

The Organic Seed & Bean company have brought out some of the most unique bars of chocolate I have ever come across. They are crammed with flavour & creativity and are the latest bars to hit the organic and Fairtrade ethical market! (In fact, they’re the best in ethical chocolate.) Take a closer look….

The best in ethical chocolate

The best in ethical chocolate...

Extra Dark Chocolate

In the “extra dark” range you will come across some taste-bud tingling chilli & lime, some tongue twisting mandarin & ginger and some sensual raspberry & coconut. Not to forget the lavender, pumpkin & hemp and smoked Cornish sea salt. I bet your mouth is watering already!

The “extra dark” bars range from 66% to 72% cocoa, they come in 85g bars and are all suitable for vegans. Just think, how many of your friends would love to try one of these?

Fine Dark Chocolate

For all those who just want pure, unadulterated dark chocolate then this is the one for you… it’s Seed & Bean’s original fine dark chocolate known as Extra Dark for its high cocoa content – that’s it – nothing added.

But for those that like a little twist then why not try these? Fine dark chocolate with lemon & cardamom or coffee espresso. Certainly something to sink one’s teeth into!

Ranging from 58% to 72% in cocoa, from unadulterated to flavour sensations, these 85g bars are a great gift for anyone, and all are suitable for vegans.

Rich Milk Chocolate

How will you choose choose?? I can’t. I am a real sucker for milk chocolate and when someone presents me with the choice between milk chocolate with raspberry or milk chocolate with tangerine I just can’t pick. They are quite possibly my 2 most favourite flavours. (I do also have a severe weak spot for lemon.)

These 3 bars are a lot lower on the cocoa scale, all being at 37%, so they are very creamy. Completely delicious if you ask me!

Creamy White Chocolate

My other weak spot. Lemon & poppy seed. Ahhhh… just thinking about it is making me melt. I love lemon. I love white chocolate. I LOVE this combination!

Chocolate Slabs

But you know… Sometimes a bar just isn’t big enough, so Seed & Bean have brought out the slab! These are great for if your having one of those “I need chocolate” days, and they are also great for sharing (yes, you can share chocolate). There are 4 fantastic flavours all of which are not available in the small bars so yes… there are 4 MORE flavours to taste! Fine dark chocolate with double ginger, fine dark chocolate with double chilli, fine dark chocolate with cherry and creamy white with blueberry & vanilla. Oh how do you pick?

Check out the whole Seed & Bean Range many of which have gained  Vegan accreditation too. (I’d get shopping quick if I were you.)

Love, Chocolate and Montezuma’s Christmas

Do you love hot chocolate?

Christmas Drinking Chocolate

Christmas Drinking Chocolate

I do!

I must average about 3 hot chocolates a week at least and my quota definitely goes up during the winter.

So, I am very eager to try Montezuma’s Christmas Drinking Chocolate. (The Christmassy part consists of organic nutmeg and cinnamon, plus organic, vanilla flavoured, dark chocolate.)

Truth be told, I love Montezuma’s eccentric use of spices. (Oops I’ve just used the word love twice in a blog about chocolate – my self control must be slipping.)

Chilli, lime, sea salt, orange, ginger, geranium! – And they dare to do it with white chocolate too. You may also need to add some of their suitably spiced white ‘chocolate snowballs’ to your basket next time you’re shopping.

Monty's Advent Calender

Monty's Advent Calender

It’s probably my own opinion but Montezuma’s do Christmas with just the right amount of panache. If you’re looking for a gluten free advent calendar the question Montezuma’s will ask is if you want that in dark, milk or white chocolate? (Montezuma’s chocolate is usually gluten free and organic and not uncommonly vegan too.)

If it’s a gift you want then you can choose from a Mini Bar Gift Box, a Truffle Box or a 12 days of Christmas limited edition gift box or a stocking filler of chocolate snowmen or their Chocolate Library and more…

But, whatever your chocolate fancy, I do have one polite request, please just don’t get in between me and my hot chocolate. I can’t promise to be responsible for my consequential actions.

Don’t stop me now… vegan chocolates crack the milk-choc flavour recipe

A new chocolate is breaking all the rules.

Vegan chocolate has to be dark – that’s the rule. Anything which tries to taste like milk chocolate ends up too oily or watery to compare.

Then came Moo Free and it shocked the world. One television review summed it up…

We don’t know how they’ve done it but Moo Free have created a milky-tasting bar without any dairy content.

It was dairy free, lactose free, gluten free, wheat free, egg free, casein free and vegan. Moo Free’s advent calanders sold out – suddenly parents of children on restricted diets were able to give their children something they would love.

The ingredients were simple and organic : sugar, cocoa butter, rice powder, cocoa mass, emulsifier (sunflower lecithin) and natural flavouring.

MooFree have 3 new flavours

MooFree have 3 new flavours

So where has the milk gone? It seems to be something to do with using rice powder as an alternative although, of course, the true recipe is a closely guarded secret.

There is a social context to this. Leading chefs like Chris Horridge are regularly finding new ways of improving the flavour of foods while cutting back on sugar, dairy and gluten in an effort to feed a rapidly expanding free-from market. It is opening up a whole new world of food experiences and products, introducing ingredients like rice flour, which Moo Free has been able to take advantage of.

Meanwhile, other chocolatiers are working hard to catch up. Organica have produced a much raved about Vegan Milk Chocolate Couverture – it too uses rice as a major substitute ingredient. And another challnger for great tasting vegan milk chocolate may be ‘Celtic Chocolates’ though, personally, I have yet to get my hands on these. Chocolates from Booja Booja and Montezuma are excelent too of course, but here we are firmly back in the dark lands of plain chocolate goods.

Now Moo Free are upping the ante with three new dairy free flavours: Organic Banana Chocolate (Can you imagine? Though, currently, the honeyed glaze isn’t vegan.) Organic Cranberry and Hazelnut Chocolate or Caramelised Hazelnut Chocolate.

Finally, a bit of conspiracy, if you check Moo Free’s facebook page it should be the case that you could see how popular the new flavours are – unfortunately, someone hacked their details and they had to start again – not everything is love and fairness in the world of fairtrade vegan chocolate.

Bonfire night food (including Gluten Free options)

It’s cold, hopefully it won’t rain, but whether it’s a gathering of small or large group of friends Bonfire Night really can be one of those intimate celebrations that draws people together.

But, however you plan it, don’t forget the provisions.

1. Warm soup – best served in mugs to keep the hands warm.
2. Hot chocolate – save the cocoa for later and everyone will be grateful.
3. Parkin – this ginger spiced cake is a traditional part of fireworks night and goes really well with the hot chocolate (recipe and gf recipe).
4. Toasted Marshmallows – part of the entertainment (as long they don’t go up in flames). Eskal make gluten free marshmallows(you can’t tell the difference) so they can be enjoyed by all the kids.

Have fun on fireworks night

Have fun together on fireworks night

5. Baked spuds with baked beans – a warming option for the hungry.
6. Cinder toffee – some people can’t get enough of the stuff (recipe)
7. Toffee apples – while we’re talking about toffee, these are an absolute must and they’re so much better homemade (recipe).
8. Campfire banana splits – why should apples have all the fun? The children can make these without any trouble – just wrap them in foil and press chocolate buttons into the middle. Then leave them among the ashes. Easy! (For a really sticky treat alternate the chocolate pieces with pieces of marshmallow… yummy!)

Do you dream of chocolate heaven? Double blessings come with Green & Black’s

Butterscotch choc, raisin choc with hazelnuts, creamy milk chocolate, almond chocolate, ginger chocolate, espresso chocolate, chocolate with orange and spices, mint chocolate, vanilla white chocolate, dark chocolate with cherries, milk chocolate with a soft caramel centre… the list goes on… and on…

But when you dream of chocolate heaven, what more could you want? Whether it’s 30%, 32%, 34%, 60%, 70% or 85% of cocoa solids – there’s so much choice!

You could just possibly transcend seventh heaven with Green & Black’s eight new Organic and Fairtrade collections.

Starting with the largest, there’s The Ultimate Collection – 15 bars of intense and refined chocolate tastes. Then there’s The Tasting Collection with 25 tantalizing flavours including an exciting new Dark Chocolate with Burnt Toffee bar.

Green & Black’s after dinner style chocolates ‘Conversations’ come in two varieties: a mixture of 40 Milk, White, Dark or Butterscotch textures or 27 squares of dark chocolate infused with peppermint oil. Both Conversation boxes are full of chocolates decorated with ingenious questions designed to intrigue and inspire after dinner conversation.

Finally the chocolatiers have organised their Miniature Bar Collection into four cornucopian pleasures. Depending on whether your friend loves a majority of dark or milk or white chocolate you can bestow 12 little blessings on them, or not bother with the choice and give 24 miniatures with a selection of chocolate bites from each.
